on the road

Slow, sticky summer days have a way of running together, don't they? You almost forget that they are a succession; you don't feel them rolling forward. But forward they roll, of course, which is why there's never enough time -- not even enough time to do nothing. This is especially worrisome because it's often nothing that stays with you for the rest of your life. So we stopped putting off our list of nothings to do, hopped on a plane, and did what we always talked about doing: a family roadtrip through the American West.
I think the best thing about traveling the world is gaining an increased appreciation for what you have back home. I don't just mean that in a "home sweet home" way. I mean that, after visiting over 35 countries on 5 continents, I truly believe there is nothing in the world you can't find right here in the United States. I've burned incense in Buddhist monasteries and seen a Zoroastrian sky burial, but I felt equally out of my element touring the Salt Lake Tabernacle. I've seen Scylla and Charybdis, Caribbean beaches -- the water of our lakes is just as blazing blue. We have ruins, monuments, and little immigrant grannies cooking the most exotic food you could desire. It's all here..you just have to know where to look.
And nowhere is the sky so big.
Thought I'd share some pictures -- I'm struggling with this meager app, so apologies in advance.

Jackson, WY: view of Grand Tetons national park
Bear Lake, ID -- you can't really tell, but the water is this awesome turquoise shade
Mmm ribs. Giant, juicy ribs.
Under an arch made of antlers, Jackson again
Garden City, UT: signature fresh raspberry shakes right after crossing into Utah

  7. I still think it's worth pointing out that you're extremely lucky to have been able to travel the world. Even if you can see it all in the U.S., going abroad still teaches you about different cultures and opens you up to a whole other side of history. I've never been out of the U.S. and would jump at a chance to travel Europe.

  8. This is a great post! I completely agree with you about the States having some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world. Growing up my family would always take vacations out West to visit the National Parks, which at the time I detested because all of my friends were going to exotic beaches and such. But looking back on it now I feel very lucky to have experienced such wonderful history and geography growing up.

  11. Another great blog post Sophia :). Thanks for keeping us updated and hope to read more soon!

By the way, I like your writing style. Have you thought about going into journalism as a profession? I also could see you becoming a writer/author like your mom.

  12. Love it! I've been under that same arch in Jackson Hole. I always feel more love for the U.S. when I have been overseas. I think I kind of mean it in a home sweet home kind of way, but also that the U.S. has a vast array of so many amazing places and people to see. The opportunities/explorations are endless.

P.S.-What ever happened to the hand written letter reply?! :)

True story, Sophia. Happens no matter how much one tends to lament about his/her home country.

  14. Wow... I would LOVE to travel the world as well :) Which I will do, of course, as soon as I'm older and rich and famous, lol. But seriously, you're so lucky... Oh and the beginning sequence? Thanks.

  17. Over 35 countries and 5 continents ! Wow, and my friends think I travel too much ...
In different parts of the world they sometimes teach different manners to divide the continents, some think that there are 7 continents for example, so have you already been in Africa ?
I think that I can confidently say that I'm the only one in the country of Benin that reads your posts ! ( yay, I feel so proud now !).
Are you taking out your map to check where it is right now ? Oh wait. Who am I kidding, with Tiger mom you probably know every country in the world, with every city, every neighbourhood, every single building, every freakin' road, and even my medical record ! ( well, maybe not the last one ... right ?).
Okay, that's a boring long post. You learn french, don't you ? Or is it your sister ? Alors je termine en français, pour t'entraîner ! Enfin, j'aimerais bien envoyer une lettre, mais avec la poste béninoise ... On ne sait jamais.

Keep up with the blog ! It's awesome.

  19. Sophia, maybe I should post this comment to your "how to study like a tiger cub" post, but I figure you're more likely to check new comments on the most recent. Do you listen to music while you study/work on homework? Thanks!

  21. One of my dreams is to travel as much as I can... haven't nearly traveled as much as you, but I agree that traveling lets you appreciate other cultures and places while understanding and loving what you have at home.

  24. Hey Sophia, will you marry me? I want to say that was a joke but it wasn't :3. You're like Megan Fox + brains + tiger stripes. Anywho I'll ask a question just as serious as the first one, where do you see yourself in 20 years?

  34. Our family also did a tour of the West this summer and we loved it. Our trip took us to Mt. Rushmore, Jackson Hole/Yellowstone, and Denver/Colorado Springs. OMG, so much driving, but we had such a wonderful time. Jackson is one of my favorite places to visit and Yellowstone is truly unbeatable in its abundance of beautiful scenic views. I can't wait to go back. Thanks for sharing your pictures!

  40. Hey Sophia!
Could you tell us about what classes you're taking this semester? (note: this does NOT translate into me asking about your major or life plans.) I'm particularly interested in how Sanskrit is treating you; you're going to be fluent in quite a few languages soon! And your TA sounds hilarious- making you guys translate "in a previous cow" and such. lawlz.
I hope your semester is going well! :)

  41. Just saw your mother’s tweet about your double major :) wow, a DOUBLE major! being more of an overachiever than either of your parents I see, lol jk jk :) Congrats on declaring it- I love the combo!! Please let us know what philosophy works throughout college end up influencing you the most; I’m very interested in philosophy myself. What does your dad have to say about you declaring the field as useless, though ;) I call shenanigans.
